4.6 Degradation and Persistence
The high biodegradability of styrene is shown by the BOD20 and BOD28/ThOD ratio (which is >40) and the OECD test(s) for ready biodegradability, i.e. 60% degradation within 10 days. Although the availability of nutrients, i.e. nitrogen and phosphorous will be the determining factor, styrene is in principle degradable in the (anaerobic) soil environment. Degradation in the atmospheric environment is expected within minutes to hours.
